I can swallow cereal w/ minimal pain.  Whoopdidoo!  I'm on the ultra slow road to recovery.  If I don't watch myself (i.e. forget to take Tylenol or Ibuprofren) a fever of 102 could still crop up here and there.  But, that's ok. :)

Anywho, so I've been watching these Japanese dramas a friend lent me. (Maybe prolonged concentration on reading Chinese subtitles isn;t helping my recovery process).  I've been meaning to catch up on my J-dorama.  Now, finally, I can, although a few years behind.  I just finished Love Revolution and am now watching Hatsu Taiken, which is about this 27 year old virgin veterinarian who is desperate to lose her virginity before 28.  It's quite cute and touching at the same time.  And it doesn't hurt that it has a couple of very cute guys in it.  Both of these dramas has Naohito Fujiki in them, and he plays very different characters.  Not only does the man have a fine face (and hair), but not bad an actor either.  Hehe.

Suddenly, my plans to return to Ithaca have hit a snag.  My fever, the low one I've been having the past 4 days, just reached 103.  Nevertheless, without a sore throat, this still is a walk in the park compared to full blown tonsillitis.  Will this turn into that?  I hope not.  Hope it's just a minor viral infection that will wear itself out before it wears me out within the week.  Everyone, please pray to buddha for me.

In response to Jempress3's response to Leonfans - I have not been watching too much of XiaoZhuangMiShi b/c I've been sick.  Still stuck at the same places where I left off watching w/ Jempress3.  I've been running a low fever and having a swollen gland for the past 3 days.  My dad, however, is already up to episode 30.  Yes, it is VERY addictive.

I did manage to get my hair cut short despite being sick.  Yes, I got my hair cut twice in 2 weeks.  Impressive, no?  I didn't quite like how the NYC hairstylist cut my hair.  He gave me too Hong Kong a look to my haircut.  It was almost a mullet.  So, I had the Boston one chop it all off.  He did a pretty good job.  So, I'm happy.  Now, I look more Japanese than HK, as my sister says...which, in terms of hair, is a good thing.  I think in terms of hair, I'm going to stay w/ my Boston stylist, no matter where I end up for a job, b/c I like him better.  I liked his highlights better and I like his haircuts better.  I think you can decide what salon you like by whether you like the styles sported by the people who work there.  And in general, I have to say that I like the styles sported by the employees in the Boston salon vs. the NYC one.  I think the NYC one is too HK-biased.  Hence, the styles come out almost too hay-stacky and mullety.  HK styles tend to over sharpen and thin out the Japanese styles.  So, whereas Japanese hair still has a fuller, natural, softer look to them, the HK ones look like you are wearing a helmet of some sort or, for longer hair, a wig of some sort.  I wonder what went wrong in translation.

Anywho - it's time to shop for a pair of new cross trainers. I've been wearing trail runners for so long, now that I've no use for running due to my back issues, I have to switch to more versatile shoes, esp. for tennis (as Leonfans kindly reminded me).  Hopefully, I can recover sufficiently by tomorrow for me to squeeze in another game of tennis.  On the other hand, the forecast for tomorrow is hot and humid plus scattered T-storms. Oy.  But then, at least Boston is 10 degrees cooler than NYC.

So, I'm very into some of the Mandarin rock acts out there.  I used to be HK music centric.  But recently, there has not only been a lack of talent on that front, but almost negative talent coming up to reverse all the goodwill that was built up in my heart during my youth.  Now, I'm discovering Taiwan artists and Singaporean ones.  They do not disappoint.  Whereas old Mandarin rock and pop was bland and boring, some of these artists nowadays are very good.  They compose their own songs, play the instruments, imbue life into the music.  And, if I do say so myself, if they released their music in the English speaking world, it would still translate well.  Yes, I think some of them are that good.  Mainly, as Leonfans knows, I am currently listening to Huang Yida (Singaporean) and a band called Mayday or Wu Yue Tian (Taiwanese).  On the side, I have some guilty pleasures still in manufactured acts like S.H.E. and F4.  But hey, at least they have good people writing songs for them.  And never forget Jay Chou (I'm sure Leonfans wouldn't let me).

Speaking of Mayday...I think it's funny to hear my sister (who's not very familiar w/ Chinese) trying to get their name right.  She could read the Chinese Wu Yue Tian.  However, her gut reaction upon seeing this was to ask me if their name was "Fifth Month's Day".  And I was like - "um, no.  I think it makes more sense if it's literally translated as Mayday, no?"  I guess this is one of those lost in translation things.  :)

It's been a LONG time since I last posted.  However, three things of note happened today which I want to put down somewhere:

1)  The water shut off during my shower (after I soaped and shampooed but before I rinsed) and when it finally came back, it was all cold only!
2)  It took me 2 hours, yes, 2 hours, to find parking for my car on the street.
3)  I saw Keanu Reeves outside my apartment gate as I was going to park my car tonight.

2 bad, 1 good.  I think the finaly tally (w/ special weight given to Keanu) falls on the good side.

It's been a while since my last blog.  So what's the grand occasion?  Squirrel.  Today I want to write about the furry invader to my apartment this afternoon.

I came home this afternoon, looking forward to a much needed nap.  Alas, it was not meant to be.  I heard some strange clanging noises from the bathroom area.  First, I thought it was my roommate.  Then, I realized that Vicky, quiet as she is, isn't that furtive.  So, I turned on the kitchen light (which promptly flickered to a quick and uneventful death) and walked toward the bathroom, where I saw a flash of little eyes and panicked movement in the bath tub.  Panic rose in me too.  After a brief "oh dear", I walked away from the bathroom, hoping the problem would disappear.  Unfortunately, the Harvard education kicked in and the voice in my head told me that I ought to investigate further.  So, on came the bathroom lights (at least they stayed on) and out ran the little critter...right into my bedroom.  By the sights of the room, there was nothing to bemoan with this new invasion, as there were clear signs of earlier invasion already.  Not one to argue with a squirrel that insists on residing under my bed, I decided to close the doors while calling the rental agency for assistance in extracting my unwelcome visitor.   Help came soon enough (but not before I went back in to my bedroom to get my laptop and prompted the squirrel to run toward the door/exit and bang its head twice on it before it decided the underside of the bed was better after all, at least for its head).  After a 20 minute chase (during which I was told to hide myself in my roommate's bedroom), the illegal entrant was safely captured and released into the front yard.  Its family, however, is still residing in our attic.  Oooh-whoo!  That explains the mysterious holes that have been appearing lately in our ceiling.
To evict the family, the maintenance people will be coming throughout the week with traps and whatnot.  Great, nothing like squirrel hunting in the attic while studying and taking finals!

Of course, this hasn't been a bad experience completely.   I was on the fence about washing the sheets after Jempress' weekend stay.  The squirrel  cast the deciding vote by depositing a squirrel shit pellet on the sheet.  Into the washer they go!  And, finally, they are gonna fix those mystery holes in the ceiling!   I was too caught up in all the excitement to remember to ask them to change the dead kitchen light.  Oh well, they'll be back throughout the week to extract more squirrels.  I guess I could ask them to replace the kitchen light any time.  In the mean time, I'll just cook in the dark and hope for the best.
